But are conservatives uncaring and greedy for taking this approach? Especially in light of the fact that we are spending money we don’t have, is it greedy and uncaring for people to oppose massive new government initiatives like national government-run healthcare?

I think it’s important to realize that no matter what the good intentions are, explosive debt financing is going to wreck this country; no mandated charity is worth destroying an economy.

To those who say conservatives and Republicans are mean-spirited, it cannot be emphasized often enough that if the money is not there, it is not there.

Regarding notions of charity rebuffed, government is incapable of being charitable because it is not a person, it is an institution, subject to bureaucracy, corruption and ineptitude. Furthermore, charity is voluntary. Mandating charity defeats the whole purpose.
