It is a difficult dream for the European upper classes to interpret adequately, and too many of us ourselves have grown weary and mistrustful of it. It is not a dream of motor cars and high wages merely, but a dream of social order in which each man and each woman shall be able to attain to the fullest stature of which they are innately capable, and be recognized by others for what they are, regardless of the fortuitous circumstances of birth or position.&#8221;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;In the United States’ Declaration of Independence, our founding fathers: &#8220;…held certain truths to be self&#45;evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.&#8221; Might this sentiment be considered the foundation of the American Dream? &lt;/p&gt;

Were the immigrants who came to the United States looking for their bit of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, their Dream? And what did the desire of the veteran of World War II &#45; to settle down, to have a home, a car and a family &#45; tell us about this evolving Dream? Is the American Dream attainable by all Americans? Would Martin Luther King feel his Dream was attained? Did Malcolm X realize his Dream?&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Some say, that the American Dream has become the pursuit of material prosperity &#45; that people work more hours to get bigger cars, fancier homes, the fruits of prosperity for their families &#45; but have less time to enjoy their prosperity. Others say that the American Dream is beyond the grasp of the working poor who must work two jobs to insure their family’s survival. Yet others look toward a new American Dream with less focus on financial gain and more emphasis on living a simple, fulfilling life.&lt;/p&gt;

A doctor, nurse, or social worker can provide information about a patient’s specific needs, the availability of home care services, and a list of local home care agencies.&lt;/p&gt;

Last month I contracted a virus that put me in the hospital for twelve days, including three days in intensive care. I&#8217;ve had another three weeks of recovery. I am 31 years old and single. I was working part time but don&#8217;t have a job to go back to because I was out for five weeks and they had to get someone else.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The hospital bill is $56,000 and I owe the various specialist doctors another $20,500. I am working with a social worker there to try and get some (maybe all) of the costs forgiven, or have a long term payment plan. Really, if I can&#8217;t afford health insurance, how am I going to afford payments on $76k? However, the hospital and doctors performed a very important service for me and I feel they should get paid.&lt;/p&gt;

      <description>&lt;p&gt;There is a notion out there that conservatives are harsh and uncaring because A) they wish to strive towards success and B) they resist charitable government mandates.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;But are conservatives uncaring and greedy for taking this approach? Especially in light of the fact that we are spending money we &lt;i&gt;don&#8217;t have&lt;/i&gt;, is it greedy and uncaring for people to oppose massive new government initiatives like national government&#45;run healthcare?&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;I think it&#8217;s important to realize that no matter what the good intentions are, explosive debt financing is going to wreck this country; no mandated charity is worth destroying an economy.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Attached is a graph from the CBO displaying projected deficits.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;To those who say conservatives and Republicans are mean&#45;spirited, it cannot be emphasized often enough that if the money is not there, it is not there.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Regarding notions of charity rebuffed, government is incapable of being charitable because it is not a person, it is an institution, subject to bureaucracy, corruption and ineptitude. Furthermore, charity is voluntary. Mandating charity defeats the whole purpose.
